The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) is the leading nonprofit organization defending civil liberties in the digital world. Founded in 1990, EFF champions user privacy, free expression, and innovation through impact litigation, policy analysis, grassroots activism, and technology development. EFF is seeking an Grassroots Activism Organizer to support our grassroots advocacy efforts, and engage in outreach to grassroots groups, with a focus on technical communities and hackerspaces. Working closely with the grassroots advocacy team, the Grassroots Activism Organizer will spend part of their time traveling across the country to support our Electronic Frontier Alliance (EFA) partners and facilitate workshops with interested community-based groups, and part of their time at our home office in San Francisco working to grow our national network by developing remote relationships with organizers and coordinating outreach to new groups. Regardless of location, a portion of this individual’s time will be spent documenting outreach efforts and writing persuasively on a broad range of topics.
The ideal candidate will have passion for protecting digital rights, with the ability to think critically and prioritize time effectively. You excel at bringing people together to work for a common purpose, keeping a positive attitude while navigating disagreements. You’re adept at implementing: finding solutions and adapting to changes as ideas turn into projects and campaigns.
Promote EFF’s community organizing efforts to the public, especially to technical communities. This includes promotion on social media, on the EFF calendar, and through mailings.
Work with the EFF organizing team to help foster community and sharing of resources within the EFA.
Speak publicly about digital rights issues, including hosting awareness-raising sessions for concerned individuals.
Travel to support and recruit community groups across the country.
Write blog post and other pieces uplifting the work of our Electronic Frontier Alliance partners;
Inspire, encourage, and mentor community organizers and trainers looking to engage with digital rights issues in their home communities.
Promote events being hosted by EFA members;
Help the organizing team set priorities and meet short and long-term goals;
Provide support for the administrative needs of the community organizing program, including scheduling calls, following up on training and speaking requests, hosting regular conference calls, documenting contacts and outreach opportunities appropriately, and providing prompt responses to individuals seeking to learn more about the Electronic Frontier Alliance.
Monitor Alliance members’ social media in order to identify opportunities to uplift the work of local allies;
Work alongside other members of the Organizing team to aid in thoughtful strategic decisions;
Blog about digital rights issues, particularly those connected to local advocacy.
Speak to the press about EFF’s digital rights issues, especially our grassroots outreach campaigns.
Identify new growth opportunities and strategies for organizing.
Field inquiries for EFF staff and EFA member groups to participate in local events;
Help maintain the EFA website and update any written materials needed for campaigns.
Other projects and tasks determined in collaboration with the Activism Director and Associate Director of Community Organizing;
Participate in EFF staff meetings, committees, and events.
Qualities We’re Seeking

Experience in community organizing;
Compelling public speaking skills;
Strong familiarity with and passion for digital civil liberties issues;
Joy building rapport with people across all manners of backgrounds, interests, and experiences;
An ability to treat others with kindness and patience;
The ability to work with a diverse group of stakeholders, both inside and outside the organization.
Comfort and interest in learning unusual technical tools.
An eagerness to learn about new issues and meet new people from many walks of life;
Excellent writing skills and experience in maintaining correspondence with a substantial number of contacts;
Technical skills, including content management systems;
Experience working in a collaborative setting;
A talent for creating authentic relationships, and passion for the principles of online privacy, free expression, and innovation;
Excellent judgment and strategic thinking;
Social media fluency.
Experience and expertise in any of the following areas of advocacy are highly advantageous: online free speech, copyright reform, patent reform, open access, right to repair.
Schedule and Location: This is a full-time exempt position at EFF’s offices in San Francisco. Applicants must be able to attend events in and around San Francisco.
